Remote Desktop Access to Terminal Server

We have setup remote desktops with SecureCRT pre-configured to automatically log in and open all of the routers and switches. This is a real time saver allowing you to get started right away instead of worrying about connecting to each and every device manually. You also will not have to worry about the % Connection refused by remote host error message with this setup.

Follow these instructions to connect to the remote desktop:

Remote Desktop Connection Instructions

Press the Windows Key + R to bring up the Run window and type in mstsc to launch Remote Desktop Connection. Mac users can download a Mac version of the software from here:

In the Remote Desktop Connection window enter the RDP address of the rack you are scheduled for. For the RDP address email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

We need to minimize the bandwidth usage of the RDP session and to improve connection speed. Before pressing the Connect button, click on Options > Experience and uncheck all the options under "Allow the following:" except for Persistent bitmap caching.

Be sure the Clipboard option is selected under Options > Local Resources > Clipboard to enable copy-and-paste for the remote desktop session.

You will be shown a Windows login window. Type in the username and password that was emailed to you previously and press OK. If you have not received your username and password, then email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. For Service Provider users, contact This email address is being protected from spambots. IMPORTANT: On the 3rd line that says “Log on to:” be sure CCIERACKRENTAL is selected or you will get a logon error.

Once logged into the remote computer, double click the SecureCRT 7.0 icon on the desktop.

All of the routers from R1 to R# and switches from SW1 to SW4 will automatically load in a separate tab. You can use your lab from here. For Racks 30, 31, 32, and 33 there is also a Frame Relay Switch (FRS). The FRS might not open in a new tab automatically. If you need to access the FRS, select it from the list of available SecureCRT sessions from the File menu or the main tool bar.

When you are done with your session, please be sure to properly log off the remote desktop by clicking on Start > Log Off to clear the remote desktop session for the next user. Do not just click on the X to close the RDP window. This will leave the session active and will prevent the next user from being able to log in.

Is the rack on? Your rack may be turned off. If there is no response from the routers or switches after connecting to them, then the equipment may be turned off. Follow the instructions in the Remote Power Controller instructions to turn them on.
